Toro OEM 117-2314 Deflector Triggers - Step-by-Step Installation

Tools You’ll Typically Need

  • Phillips screwdriver or nut driver (for covers/shrouds if equipped)
  • Small pick or flat screwdriver (to help seat springs)
  • Needle-nose pliers (helpful for spring handling)
  • Safety glasses (springs can pop free)

Installation Steps

1) Make It Safe

  1. Shut the machine off and let all moving parts come to a complete stop.
  2. Disconnect power:
    • Gas unit: remove the spark plug wire.
    • Battery unit: remove the battery pack.
  3. Work on a bench or flat surface so small parts don’t get lost.

2) Get Access to the Trigger Area

  1. Locate the chute/deflector control area near the chute base/handle assembly.
  2. If a cover/shroud blocks access, remove the screws and set the cover aside.

3) Remove the Old Trigger

  1. Locate the worn/broken trigger on the deflector control.
  2. Take a quick photo of spring orientation before disassembly.
  3. Carefully relieve spring tension and remove the trigger from its pivot/retainer - Will need to Use a Flat Screwdriver End and Carefully Pry it Apart beings it is a Clip-Together Assembly.

4) Replace / Transfer the Spring(s)

  1. Inspect the compression spring(s). Replace if stretched, rusty, or damaged.
  2. Install the spring(s) into/on the trigger pockets exactly like the original setup.
  3. Many assemblies use (2) compression springs in this area—verify during disassembly.

5) Install the New 117-2314 Trigger

  1. Position the new trigger in the same direction as the original - It Assembles as a Clip-Together Assembly.
  2. Seat the trigger’s pivot tabs/points into the housing.
  3. Compress and seat the spring(s) fully into their pockets (pliers help here).
  4. Move the trigger by hand—ensure it moves freely and snaps back when released.

6) Reassemble and Function Test

  1. Reinstall any covers/shrouds you removed.
  2. Reconnect spark plug wire / reinstall battery.
  3. Test operation:
    • Squeeze trigger, move deflector, release trigger.
    • Confirm it returns properly and holds/locks position as designed.
